I’m busy being diplomatic
The Washington Post editorialize the horrid tale of Shin Dong-hyuk and the American and South Korean reaction to it. Most interesting point is the summary of Christopher Hill’s position
Mr. Hill’s larger point is that the United States should be practical in relations with the north and not simply denounce abuses so that America can feel good about itself.
I have no doubt that many people become activists to feel better about themselves. I can assure you that those who take the mantle of North Korean Human Rights are not doing it for that reason alone. The issue has zero glamor and it is a constant uphill battle to persuade others the worthiness of the cause.
Most activists want the United States and South Korea to help the North Korean people and recognize North Korea act irrationally regardless the US bring up human rights or act “diplomatic”.
If diplomacy means doing nothing, then activist should demand that the new administration be less so, regardless of how North Korean would react.
